ESSENCE BEYOND FORM
Much as the news of the East came to a chaotic medieval Europe, Chinese art has always come to me as unsurpassed in its beauty, in its peacefullness.
I have always felt closest to the flower paintings, the portraits and the water landscapes, especially of the Sung dynasty. The intimate knowledge, the keenly realistic observation, distilled until the result is an abstracted perfection, has enriched my spirit. It has especially informed my early days of work in Cambridge, as well as having retained its meaning throughout the decades of my artistic practice. In addition, the method of working - the long contemplation and then rapid execution - has been mine as well.
May this spirit be seen, as it is seized in my work. May there be some of the exquisiteness, quiet elegance, and the vital essence of things found there - sometimes quivering with life, sometimes quietly silent.
